As the tech giant seeks to expand its retail presence in China, Apple will begin selling its items on Tencent’s Megapopular messaging program WeChat.

WeChat said on that its products, including the omnipresent iPhone, would be available for purchase through the store.

WeChat, with over 1.2 billion users, is one of China’s most dominating platforms, with capabilities that extend beyond instant messaging and into a variety of so-called “Mini Programs,” small-sized programs that provide a wide range of services. As a result, WeChat has become an increasingly popular platform for Chinese customers to conduct everything from shopping to paying bills and booking vacations.

According to Counterpoint Research, Apple, which also has an official store on Alibaba’s online retailer Tmall, managed to secure a 19.9% market share in China’s smartphone industry during the first quarter. However, smartphone sales in the country have been slowing, falling by 5% year on year in the first three months of 2023.

As a result, customers can purchase the entire line of Apple products, including the latest iPhone 14 lineup, through the Mini Program. Tencent also stated that orders placed through WeChat are qualified for free shipping and can access several additional Apple services.
